A2O LITE's debut single "NEON" reached No. 1 on Melon's Top 100 within 29 hours of its release. The nine-member girl group comes from A2O Entertainment, the company founded by Lee Soo-man after his departure from SM Entertainment.
Choreographer J Black has since described an unusual request behind the performance: after he submitted his draft for the opening duet, the team asked him to make it more difficult.
The members and their debut
The members are YOUNG, OA, AYUNE, AIJING, HIMEKI, RADA, XILI, VORA and MERCI.
A2O LITE joined the 2026 debut class with the digital single "NEON" on October 13. Their launch showcase had taken place the previous day at KINTEX in Goyang, alongside A2O SOUL, a separate 15-member boy group from the same company.
The people and music behind "NEON"
Dem Jointz and Yoo Young-jin are credited with the song's lyrics, composition and arrangement. Yoo previously worked with Lee on music for acts including BoA, TVXQ and Girls' Generation, giving this debut a direct creative connection to Lee's earlier projects.
"NEON" runs for 3 minutes and 28 seconds. Its high-note passages and dance break, together with synchronized choreography and coordinated stage outfits, recall the performance style associated with earlier generations of K-pop.
The official "NEON" video is available on A2O WORLD.
What happened on Melon
The digital single arrived at 6 p.m. KST on October 13, 2026. By 11 p.m. KST on October 14, it had reached No. 1 on Melon's Top 100.
That position changed the following morning. At 10 a.m. KST on October 15, "NEON" was sixth.
Why J Black made the opening duet harder
J Black created the introduction performed by AIJING and XILI. In a video conversation released on October 16, he described receiving the opposite of his usual feedback on idol choreography: after seeing his draft, the team wanted a more difficult routine.
He said he was also asked to keep his own dance style. He had initially softened the choreography, but the response encouraged him to increase its difficulty.
J Black recalled seeing potential in the two members before they had mastered the routine. He brought in three trainers to help them learn it, then credited AIJING and XILI for being able to perform the finished introduction.
