Korea's first Netflix original was a zombie period drama. Kingdom premiered on January 25, 2019, and set a zombie outbreak inside the Joseon royal court. Korean horror dramas have been pulling in viewers who swore they don't do horror ever since. The problem with every Halloween list is that it treats a ghost-hunting comedy and a show about teenagers being eaten as the same kind of night in. They aren't. So here are twelve Korean horror dramas sorted by how hard they actually hit, with where each one streams in the US right now, including the four you can watch free.
How the scare ladder works
The levels are my call, not a lab measurement. Level 1 is spooky with a lot of jokes, so you can watch it with your parents. Level 4 is the stuff I'd warn a friend about before they press play. The streaming column comes from JustWatch data via TMDB for the US, pulled on September 22, 2026. Licences move every month, so check the platform before you plan a weekend around it.
| Drama | Level | Episodes | Where it streams (US) | Free? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tale of the Nine Tailed | 1 | 16 | Netflix, Prime Video, Viki | Yes, Tubi, Roku Channel |
| The Uncanny Counter | 1 | 28 (2 seasons) | Netflix | No |
| Beyond Evil | 2 | 16 | Netflix, Viki, KOCOWA | Yes, Tubi, Roku Channel, Prime Video with ads |
| Strangers from Hell | 2 | 10 | Viki | Yes, Roku Channel, OnDemandKorea |
| Hellbound | 2 | 12 (2 seasons) | Netflix | No |
| Happiness | 3 | 12 | Netflix, Viki | Yes, Roku Channel |
| Duty After School | 3 | 10 | Prime Video, Viki | No |
| Parasyte: The Grey | 3 | 6 | Netflix | No |
| Sweet Home | 3 | 26 (3 seasons) | Netflix | No |
| All of Us Are Dead | 4 | 12 | Netflix | No |
| Gyeongseong Creature | 4 | 17 (2 seasons) | Netflix | No |
| Kingdom | 4 | 12 + special | Netflix | No |
The count behind the table: seven of the twelve are Netflix-only in the US, and four can be watched free with ads. All four free titles first aired on Korean TV channels: Tale of the Nine Tailed and Happiness on tvN, Beyond Evil on JTBC, Strangers from Hell on OCN. None of the Netflix originals is free. That's the pattern to remember: the originals stay on Netflix, and the TV-channel shows are the ones that end up on free ad-supported apps. It doesn't work the other way round, though: The Uncanny Counter aired on OCN and is still Netflix-only.
Level 1–2: dread without the gore
Tale of the Nine Tailed (tvN, 2020) is a gumiho fantasy with Lee Dong-wook, Jo Bo-ah and Kim Bum. It gets closer to romance than to horror, which makes it the right first night. The Uncanny Counter follows the Counters, a team hunting evil spirits that have escaped from the afterlife. The first season ran 16 episodes on OCN and the second 12 on tvN in 2023. It has more fist fights than frights, and it's funnier than it has any right to be.
Level 2 is where the fear turns psychological. Beyond Evil has no ghosts at all: it's a JTBC thriller about two small-town policemen, played by Shin Ha-kyun and Yeo Jin-goo, and it won Best Drama, Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards. Strangers from Hell is ten claustrophobic episodes in a cheap dormitory with Yim Si-wan and Lee Dong-wook, and it's the one people remember for the neighbours. Hellbound, from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, begins with supernatural beings appearing to condemn people to Hell. It's frightening mostly because of what the crowds do next.
Level 3: creatures, infection, no hiding
Happiness (tvN, 2021) locks Han Hyo-joo and Park Hyung-sik inside a new apartment building during an outbreak, in a world where infectious disease has become normal. Watched after 2020, it's hard to shake. Duty After School conscripts high-school students to fight purple alien objects, and its ten episodes are harsher than the premise suggests. Parasyte: The Grey is Yeon Sang-ho again, spinning off Hitoshi Iwaaki's manga into six tight episodes. Sweet Home is the long one: three seasons and 26 episodes from a Naver webtoon that, per Wikipedia's count, logged over 2.1 billion views. Season one is the one to judge it on.
Level 4: the ones to warn a friend about
All of Us Are Dead follows a class of students trapped in their high school as a zombie virus spreads. The violence lands harder because the victims are teenagers. Gyeongseong Creature, with Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee, is a historical mystery-horror across two seasons and 17 episodes, and its cruelty is human before it's monstrous. And Kingdom is still the benchmark: Kim Eun-hee's zombie sageuk, set in Joseon in 1601, two seasons of 12 episodes plus a special, and the show that opened Netflix's Korean originals.
Mina's Take
If you only have one weekend, don't start with Kingdom. Start at level 2 with Beyond Evil. It's free with ads in the US, it has no monsters, and it'll still keep you up, which tells you what Korean horror is actually good at. The genre's strength isn't the creature. It's the moment a community decides who deserves to suffer. Hellbound is built entirely on that, and so is the back half of Sweet Home. Kingdom earns its level 4, but it's the finale, not the entry point. My prediction, with a window: by Halloween 2027, the free column in this table grows from four titles to at least six, as more broadcast-era thrillers land on Tubi and the Roku Channel. If it's still four, I read the licensing market wrong.

Korean horror dramas FAQ
What is the scariest Korean drama?
For sustained gore and dread, Kingdom, All of Us Are Dead and Gyeongseong Creature sit at the top. For psychological fear, Strangers from Hell is the one people struggle to finish.
Are there Korean horror dramas on Netflix?
Plenty. In the US, Kingdom, Hellbound, Sweet Home, All of Us Are Dead, Gyeongseong Creature, Parasyte: The Grey and The Uncanny Counter all stream on Netflix.
Can I watch Korean horror dramas for free?
Yes, with ads. In the US, Beyond Evil, Strangers from Hell, Happiness and Tale of the Nine Tailed are on free tiers such as Tubi, the Roku Channel or OnDemandKorea.
Is Kingdom worth watching?
Yes. It was Netflix's first original Korean series, it mixes a zombie outbreak with Joseon court politics, and its two seasons run only 12 episodes plus a special.
What K-drama is like The Walking Dead?
Sweet Home and Kingdom are the closest: survival against monsters, with the living often more dangerous than the infected.
Are Korean horror dramas too gory for teens?
The level 4 shows here are graphic. Tale of the Nine Tailed and The Uncanny Counter are the gentler starting points.
