The broadcast crown: Perfect Crown, obviously
MBC's alternate-history romance — IU and Byeon Woo-seok as a commoner heiress and a grand prince in a Korea that kept its constitutional monarchy — went from a 7.8% premiere to a 13.8% finale, its peak and the top number on Masasha's list. That finale made it the third-highest-rated Friday–Saturday drama in MBC history, behind Knight Flower (18.4%) and The Red Sleeve (17.4%), and on Disney+ it became the platform's most-watched South Korean series globally, at over 43 million viewing hours. It aired April 10 through May 16 on a reported budget of 30 billion KRW, and it earned its ratings the messy way: historians accused the production of distorting real events, the director issued a public apology that ran nearly 50 minutes, and some already-broadcast scenes were re-edited — almost unheard of mid-run. A public petition to the National Assembly passed 50,000 signatures, and the physical Blu-ray release was cancelled. Right behind it sits MBC's other hit, The Judge Returns, at 13.6%: Ji Sung as a corrupt judge who dies and wakes up ten years earlier, his first MBC lead since Kill Me, Heal Me in 2015. It opened at 4.3% and climbed to 13.6% nationwide (14.9% in the Seoul area) — per Masasha, the network's first double-digit drama in almost two years. tvN's Undercover Miss Hong — Park Shin-hye's television return after a two-year gap, playing a 35-year-old financial regulator undercover as a rookie in 1997 Yeouido — pulled the year's most dramatic climb, 3.5% at premiere to 13.1%. SBS's My Royal Nemesis put Lim Ji-yeon in her first comedic lead since The Glory, hit 11.8% at home and opened at No. 1 on Netflix's global non-English chart, with 3.9 million views and a top-10 place in 44 countries in its first week. And JTBC's Reborn Rookie — a chairman and a young soccer player swapping souls, from the author behind Reborn Rich — broke its own record nearly every week on the way from 3.7% to a 13.6% finale on July 5 — level with The Judge Returns, and one of the highest-rated dramas in Korean cable history. What this table leaves out
One caveat on reading any 2026 ratings chart, this one included. Masasha's list, like most of these rankings, does not include KBS's long-running weekend family dramas. On the night Reborn Rookie ended, KBS 2TV's Recipe for Love was still Sunday's most-watched programme at 15.5%. They are a different competition — but "highest-rated drama of the year" is only true inside the miniseries lane.
The streaming lane: Netflix plays a different sport
Nielsen doesn't capture the year's loudest global hit. Teach You a Lesson, released June 5, debuted at No. 1 on Netflix's non-English chart, held it for four straight weeks and reached the Top 10 in more than 90 countries — with Lee Sung-min and Kim Mu-yeol fronting a ten-episode school-violence thriller. At its second week on top it was No. 1 in 46 countries, with 21.1 million views in a single week. Per DramaMint's platform table, Netflix also carries My Royal Nemesis and Phantom Lawyer (10.0% on SBS, Yoo Yeon-seok seeing ghosts in court), while Perfect Crown streams on Disney+ and The Scarecrow — 8.1%, a huge number for cable channel ENA, with Squid Game's Park Hae-soo — went to Viki and Prime Video. Complete stories in 7 to 16 episodes, star comebacks, day-and-date global drops: that is the 2026 formula in one sentence.
Mina's Take
The pattern nobody is saying out loud: 2026's top five are all second-chance stories wearing fantasy costumes — time travel, possession, soul swaps — and none of them are actually about the fantasy. They are about fixing what you got wrong the first time, which tells you more about the national mood than any of the shows individually. My contrarian pick from the list is The Scarecrow: 8.1% on ENA is, relative to channel size, arguably a bigger achievement than Perfect Crown's 13.8%. My prediction, on the record: no second-half miniseries crosses 16% — the fall slate is thriller-heavy, and thrillers don't post romance numbers. If a H2 drama crosses 16% by December 31, I will happily eat this paragraph.
