DID YOU KNOW

Trivia & lore

  1. 01

NewJeans was launched with no teasers or countdown — the debut MV simply appeared, a deliberate rejection of standard K-pop rollout.

  2. 02

The name works two ways: jeans never go out of style, and 'new genes' for a new generation of pop.

  3. 03

The fandom name 'Bunnies' ties to the group's rabbit motif, used across logos and merchandise.

  4. 04

Creative director Min Hee-jin, previously behind SM's art direction, shaped the group's entire visual and sonic identity — and her exit fight with HYBE became the core of the later dispute.

  5. 05

At their peak the members were among the most in-demand luxury-brand ambassadors in K-pop, each fronting a different global house.

TIMELINE

The journey

ORIGIN

ADOR origin

2021 — 2022

Built inside HYBE's ADOR label under creative director Min Hee-jin, NewJeans was engineered as a deliberate counter-trend — no teasers, no pre-debut hype cycle, just a music video that appeared one day fully formed. The whole pitch was understatement in an industry addicted to spectacle.

Lineup: Five-member lineup debuted in 2022

DEBUT

Surprise debut

2022 — 2023

Attention, Hype Boy and Ditto dropped without a conventional rollout and instantly reset the sound of fourth-gen K-pop toward breezy, 2000s-coded R&B and bubblegum bass. Ditto's long chart life made them the rare rookie group with genuine cultural staying power.

GLOBAL

Get Up peak

2023 — 2024

Get Up sent the group to the top of the Billboard 200 and Super Shy became a global streaming staple, cementing the minimalist template every rival rushed to imitate. For a moment NewJeans looked like the defining act of their generation.

HIATUS

The ADOR dispute

2024 — present

A management war between Min Hee-jin and HYBE spilled onto the members, who tried to exit ADOR and relaunch as NJZ. Courts blocked the move and in October 2025 ruled the ADOR contract valid through 2029; most members returned to the label while the lineup and a comeback timeline stayed unresolved into 2026.

Lineup: Danielle's contract terminated by ADOR in Dec 2025 (litigation ongoing); Minji's status unresolved as of mid-2026
