The name aespa fuses 'avatar x experience' (æ) with 'aspect' — the two-sided real/virtual identity at the centre of the group's lore.

Each member has a digital counterpart ('ae-Karina', etc.) living in the fictional world KWANGYA, which threads through most of their music videos.

The fandom name is simply 'MY', the name of the connection between each member and her ae avatar in the storyline.

2019 — 2020
SM built aespa around a sci-fi premise — four members plus their digital 'ae' avatars in the virtual world KWANGYA — before anyone heard a song. It was Lee Soo-man's pet metaverse project, and the lore came first, which divided fans long before the music settled the argument.

Black Mamba & Next Level
2020 — 2022
Black Mamba launched the concept, but Next Level was the explosion — a chaotic, genre-splicing remake that became a generation-defining hit and made aespa a household name. They rode it straight to a Coachella stage in 2022, fast for a rookie act.

Savage to Spicy
2022 — 2023
Savage hardened the sound into aespa's signature wall-of-noise maximalism, then My World and Spicy lightened it just enough to widen the audience without losing the edge. This is the run that turned a concept group into a reliable hit machine.

2024 — 2024
