YG spent six years assembling a four-piece from a much larger trainee pool, teasing a 'new girl group' for so long that fans half-stopped believing it. The long runway is exactly why the eventual debut landed pre-loaded with hype the agency had been banking for years.

Square Up & debut run
2016 — 2018
Debuted with the Square series and a girl-crush template — half hip-hop swagger, half festival drop. Ddu-Du Ddu-Du made them the highest-charting K-pop girl group in the US to that point and set the visual-heavy formula every rival would copy.

The Album & Coachella
2019 — 2021
Kill This Love and their first full-length, The Album, turned them into a Western festival headliner — the first K-pop act to play Coachella. Netflix's Light Up the Sky documentary cemented the four as global pop celebrities, not just chart entrants.

Born Pink & solo wave
2022 — 2024
Born Pink and its record-breaking world tour made them the first girl group to headline a stadium tour at that scale, while all four launched solo careers under new labels. The group stayed a YG act even as the members signed individual deals elsewhere.

2025
