RBW built MAMAMOO around four genuinely strong vocalists — Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein and Hwasa — and previewed them through a series of collaboration singles before debut. The pitch was unusual for K-pop: a girl group sold first on singing and retro-soul musicianship rather than visuals or concept.
